2. What this is about

This app translates sewing, knitting and crochet patterns in PDF format. You upload a document, we translate the text and hand the result back to you. This policy tells you which data this involves, what we use it for and how long we keep it.

3. Sign in with Apple

You sign in to the app with "Sign in with Apple".

We process:

  • the stable user identifier Apple issues for this app
  • your email address, if Apple passes it on. This may be a relay address from Apple
  • your name, if you share it at the first sign-in
  • the version of your operating system, so we can place errors

Purpose: we need an account to tie your credits, your free quota and your jobs to you. Without an account we cannot provide the service.

Legal basis: Article 6 (1) (b) GDPR, performance of the contract.

Retention: until you delete your account.

4. Your documents

When you start a translation, you transfer your document to our server.

We process:

  • the file itself, in order to translate it
  • the file name, the page count and the languages you chose
  • the time, the progress and any error messages

Purpose: carrying out the translation and delivering the result to you.

Legal basis: Article 6 (1) (b) GDPR, performance of the contract.

Retention:

  • We delete the uploaded source file immediately after the translation.
  • We keep the translated document available for 24 hours, so you can download it again after an interruption. After that we delete it.
  • We keep the job details without the file content for accounting and proof.

Important: do not upload documents you hold no rights to. We do not inspect the content of your documents.

5. Translation by a processor

For the translation itself we use a language model from OpenAI. The text content of your document is transferred to OpenAI. Images, pattern sheets and charts are carried over unchanged and are not passed on as image content for text translation.

OpenAI processes the data as our processor and, under our contract, does not use it to train its own models.

Transfer to third countries: OpenAI also processes data in the United States. This is based on the Standard Contractual Clauses of the European Commission under Article 46 GDPR.

6. Technical data on server access

Every call to our interface produces:

  • your IP address
  • the time and type of the call
  • error messages

Purpose: operation, security and protection against abuse, in particular limiting how often the service may be called.

Legal basis: Article 6 (1) (f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in secure operation.

Retention: usually 14 days, then deleted automatically.

7. Data on your device and in your iCloud

This data stays with you and is not read by us:

  • your library of translated documents
  • your language setting
  • your session key, stored in the Apple keychain
  • a copy of the list of our own apps, so it does not have to be fetched every time you open it

Your library is also held in your own iCloud storage, so you can read it on both iPhone and iPad. Apple provides that storage and it belongs to your Apple ID. We have no access to it, and translations do not travel there through us. Apple's privacy policy applies to iCloud. If you switch iCloud Drive off, the library keeps working on the device alone.

If you delete the app, the data on the device goes with it. The copy in your iCloud stays until you delete it there.

8. Reports and requests

Under "More" you can report a bug or ask for a feature. We answer you there, and you can write back.

We process:

  • the text of your report and every further message in that thread
  • whether it is a bug or a request
  • the language you chose in the app, so we answer you in that language
  • the app version, the version of your operating system and your device model identifier, for example "iPhone17,1"
  • the link to your account, so you find your reports again

What you write in a report is read and stored by us. Keep it to the matter at hand. Health data and other specially protected details do not belong there.

Purpose: reproducing and fixing the bug, considering your request and answering you.

Legal basis: Article 6 (1) (b) GDPR, performance of the contract. For improving the app also Article 6 (1) (f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in a working product.

Retention: until you delete the report in the app. If you delete your account, we remove the link to you from your reports and keep only their content, so we can still fix what was reported.

9. Pointers to our own apps

Under "More", the entry "Our apps" shows you a list of our other apps. The app fetches that list from our server at most once a day, and the icons for it from www.peppertools.de. This produces your IP address, as described in section 6.

We do not measure whether you look at the list or tap an entry. It is the same for every user and does not follow your behaviour.

Beyond that, the app contains no advertising, no analytics tools and no sharing of data for advertising purposes. We do not build usage profiles.

10. Purchases

Purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. We receive no payment details from Apple, only the confirmation that a purchase took place and an identifier to tie it to your account. Apple's privacy policy applies to the payment itself.

11. Your rights

You have the right to:

  • access your data, Article 15 GDPR
  • rectification of incorrect data, Article 16 GDPR
  • erasure, Article 17 GDPR
  • restriction of processing, Article 18 GDPR
  • data portability, Article 20 GDPR
  • object to processing based on legitimate interests, Article 21 GDPR

Write to info@peppertools.de to use them.

You can delete your account at any time in the app under "More". This deletes your account data and your job data. Your reports lose their link to you, see section 8.

You also have the right to complain to a data protection supervisory authority. The authority responsible for us is the State Commissioner for Data Protection of Lower Saxony, Germany.

12. Changes

When the app changes, we change this policy too. The version in force is the one in the app and on peppertools.de.
